Overview
The quiet alternative to Pangong: the high Changthang plateau, the Korzok nomad settlement and Tso Moriri at 4,522 m, in a designated wetland reserve.
Changthang is the western edge of the Tibetan plateau, extending across the border and rising above 4,500 m for most of its extent. It is one of the highest inhabited landscapes on earth, and almost everything about it, the thin air, the wind, the absence of trees, follows from that altitude.
The Changpa who live here are nomadic pastoralists herding yak, sheep and the pashmina goats whose winter undercoat becomes cashmere. Korzok, beside Tso Moriri, is one of the few permanent settlements, and even there many families still move with their herds through the summer.
Tso Moriri sits inside a designated wetland reserve and is a breeding ground for bar-headed geese and black-necked cranes. This is the quietest of the Ladakh lake routes; where Pangong now sees heavy day-trip traffic, Tso Moriri remains genuinely remote.

Leh to Tso Moriri via Taglang La
A long driving day over Taglang La at about 5,300 m, across the Morey plains to Korzok on the lake shore.

Tso Moriri and Korzok
A full day at the lake: Korzok monastery, the nomad camps, and birdlife along the shoreline.

Tso Moriri to Tso Kar
Across the plateau to the Tso Kar basin, a salt lake with kiang and marmot on the surrounding plains.

Tso Kar to Leh
Return over the Morey plains and Taglang La to Leh.

Permits & altitude
Tso Moriri and the Changthang plateau are protected areas requiring an Inner Line Permit. Requirements differ for Indian and foreign nationals, and some sections near the frontier are restricted. We handle the paperwork with your ID or passport details in advance.
This is the most demanding of our Ladakh tours in altitude terms. You sleep above 4,500 m for two nights and cross a 5,300 m pass. Two nights in Leh beforehand are mandatory, not optional, and we carry supplementary oxygen in the vehicle.
Tso Moriri lies within a designated wetland reserve. Camping is restricted to permitted sites, waste is carried out, and vehicles must stay on established tracks to protect the nesting grounds.

Getting there
- By air
- Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) at Leh, with direct flights from Delhi taking roughly 1 hour 20 minutes. Flying in means arriving at 3,500 m directly, which makes the first rest day non-negotiable.
- By road (Srinagar)
- The Srinagar–Leh highway, about 420 km over Zoji La and Fotu La, usually open from around May to October. Two days with a night at Kargil.
- By road (Manali)
- The Manali–Leh highway, about 470 km over Baralacha La and Tanglang La, usually open from around June to September. This is the more spectacular and the more demanding of the two approaches.

- How high is Tso Moriri?
- The lake sits at about 4,522 m, and the Korzok settlement beside it slightly higher. You sleep at this altitude for two nights, which is why the Leh acclimatisation days are compulsory.
- How does this compare with Pangong Tso?
- Tso Moriri is higher, far quieter and more remote. Pangong is a long day trip from Leh; Tso Moriri needs several days and takes you across the Changthang plateau to reach it.
- What wildlife might I see?
- Kiang (Tibetan wild ass) and marmot are common on the Morey plains and around Tso Kar. Tso Moriri is a breeding ground for bar-headed geese and black-necked cranes.
- Is supplementary oxygen carried?
- Yes, a cylinder travels in the vehicle throughout the plateau section. It is a precaution. The real safeguard is the acclimatisation schedule and the ability to descend.
- Do I need a permit?
- Yes, an Inner Line Permit is required for Tso Moriri and Changthang. We arrange it, but need your details well before departure.
